Waiting: A Story of Apocalypse Lori Schafer

This long short story was originally inspired by the History Channel program Life After People. While in this story I ultimately chose not to focus on the mechanics of the destruction of the trappings of humanity, but rather on what it does to the main character, I think the former offers a world of interesting possibilities for post-apocalyptic literature and I look forward to returning to this subject in the near future. "Waiting" tells the story of a middle-aged misanthrope who witnesses this degeneration, who lives long enough to see how quickly humanity can fail, how insufficient its infrastructure is in the case of a massive disaster. But what place is there for a person in a world without people?

Heads of the Line Lori Schafer

"Each job had its own rhythm. Scrape, scrape, scrape. Thunk; thunk; thunk. It was such a persuasive rhythm that sometimes you even forgot that it was a part of the job. Like that unfortunate header from last season. His fish had gone in crooked; hadn’t lined up properly underneath the sharp blade, and he’d reached in with his hand to set it straight. Just as his foot, so long accustomed to the periodic stomping, had come down upon the pedal, unaware that there’d been a break in the rhythm of the line, unaware that another limb had interceded between the blade and the fish..." Cheer them on as their three-way friendship succumbs to passion, then passion to romance, and romance to… well, surely it couldn’t be love. Could it?
